People all throughout Thailand will be celebrating Loy Krathong this evening. Also known as the “festival of lights”, Loy Krathong is about giving thanks to the goddess of water. Tonight will see everyone flocking to the nearest body of water, be it river, lake or ocean, to float away their bad luck on krathong.
Here in Patong, preparations are already underway, with eight large stages set up around the Bangla Road area of Patong Beach and market stalls down Bangla Road. Head on down around 5:30pm for traditional Thai dances and performances. If you haven’t made your own lotus shaped krathong, you can buy one along the beach.
More big events for Loy Krathong will be held in Karon Beach, Nai Harn lagoon, Sapan Hin (Phuket Town) and Bang Wad Reservoir (Kathu).
